D-Marin Borik is nestled in the embrace of Zadar, whose geographical position drew the attention of famous seafarers nearly 3,000 years ago, only to be settled by the Romans soon afterwards. Zadar’s enviable reputation the world over is primarily the result of its great beauty, but also huge sporting achievements. As many as four homegrown footballers were members of the national team that in 2018 earned Croatia the title of the World Cup vice champions! You have perhaps already heard of Luka Modrić, Danijel Subašić, Šime Vrsaljko and Dominik Livaković, but now you can reveal a few more details of Zadar’s glorious sporting story. No wonder there is a saying that says, “God created man, and Zadar created basketball.” Did you know that Krešimir Ćosić, one of Zadar’s greatest basketball players, was inducted to the Basketball Hall of Fame as only the third non-American? If you see youngsters playing basketball in Zadar at sunset, rest assured, soon you will be reading about them in the most prestigious sports magazines!

Speaking of sunsets, Zadar boasts the most beautiful sunset in the world. At least, according to the famous filmmaker Alfred Hitchcock. And when we tell you that the city has dedicated a large light installation to sunsets, you will no doubt become intrigued enough to check it out. As the name suggests, The Greeting to the Sun celebrates what is most precious – the light, warmth, and comfort we feel while sun rays caress our skin. With that in mind, Croatian architect Nikola Bašić has designed a 22-meter diameter circle, with photovoltaic solar modules underneath producing a special light show at night. Once the evening hits, go down to the stone-paved waterfront and enjoy the moment. Plus, the location is a perfect photo op spot that will provide you with fond memories you will look back on with yearning. Another unavoidable attraction on Zadar’s waterfront, besides The Greeting to the Sun, is the Sea Organ. This interesting installation, comprising 35 underwater tubes of different lengths, diameters, and inclinations, gives you a unique opportunity to listen to what the sea has to say.

Zadar is basketball, Zadar is the sun, but Zadar is also the Forum. The entire city is affectionately known to locals and visitors alike as a “true open-air museum.” Each street you stroll down will beckon you to explore the next one. We have mentioned Zadar’s Forum here as everything starts there. Constructed between the 1st century BC and the 3rd century AD, the Forum is a great start to your exploration of the city. You have an opportunity to stroll down one of the most famous ancient Roman squares in this part of the Adriatic region, commissioned by the first Roman Emperor Augustus! For centuries, this place has been the city’s lifeblood; nowadays, that role is played by the Kalelarga, Zadar’s famous street, where people come to see and be seen. There, you will feel the buzz and vibe of the city. While walking through Zadar, don't forget to enjoy a cup of coffee in one of Zadar's favorite cafes, because drinking coffee here is a ritual.

By now, you have probably noticed that the city is surrounded by walls. This defense system has been listed as UNESCO's World Heritage Site. In fact, every inch of Zadar’s historic core is a work of art. Stop by the small harbor, which is a fine example of the Renaissance architecture, and look for the spectacular Stone Gate. There, you will find a culinary surprise in the form of Zadar’s wonderful Foša Restaurant. It is surrounded by 16th century walls and is an ideal place to enjoy seafood delicacies. Olive tapenade, fresh tuna, harissa mayonnaise and smoked mussels are just some of their dishes that will blow you away. As for the wine list, suffice to say that the restaurant offers 120 labels from every winemaking region in the country. Croatia on your plate and in your glass – just what you need on your holiday getaway.
