CULTURE

Bordighera

Bordighera is a real jewel of the Ligurian west. Its historic centre has preserved the characteristics of the medieval era. In addition to the charm of history, the city offers tourists the beauty of its sea overlooking the Riviera di Ponente. Bordighera quickly became a first-class residential centre, very popular with the English at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century. The English organised a centre of true British style, with their banks, agencies, shops, cultural and sports clubs, the Anglican Church, and the Victoria Hall theatre. Even today, more than a century later, the main institutions of the period survive and allow the Bordighera of our time to keep the prestigious cultural tradition intact through the Bicknell Museum and the International Civic Library.

CULTURE

Villa Nobel, Sanremo

Villa Nobel, located in Corso Cavallotti in Sanremo, was built in 1870 by the Rivolese pharmacist Pietro Vaccheri. This was the last residence of Alfred Nobel, who bought it in 1892, and raised it by adding a floor. Nobel loved to call it "My Nest" and moved there mainly for health reasons. It has belonged to the community since 1969, and has since been the venue for important meetings and cultural events. Since 2002 the villa has been completely restored to its original form. It is open to the public and houses a museum on the discoveries and inventions of the nineteenth century, in addition the gardens of the villa are managed by the IPAA high school, the Professional Institute for Agriculture and the Environment of Sanremo.

NATURE

Whale watching

The excursion in the heart of the "Sanctuary of the Cetaceans" established by Italy, France and the principality of Monaco, has as its objective the search for and observation of the eight species of cetaceans that inhabit the marine area. The stretch of sea protected by the Sanctuary is a portion of the Mediterranean that is extremely rich in marine life, and certainly the most important of the entire basin because of the cetacean populations it hosts. On the territory there are departures for whale watching from both Imperia and Sanremo.

Botanical walks in the hinterland

Botanical walks in the hinterland, are the last frontier of tourism in the province of Imperia. Many visitors, especially foreigners are enthusiastic about the area, which includes Dolcedo, Valloria, Santa Brigida and even Mount Faudo, with a botanist who stops to point out particular species of flowers and plants. The walks are free, and moreover the botanist's wife, an ex-herbalist of Imperia, offers herbal teas with aquatic mint.
